The Interior Construction Timelapse of the New Cruise Center in Hamburg’s HafenCity

A New Gateway for Hamburg's Cruise Ships

With the Cruise Center HafenCity, a modern hub for cruise passengers from around the world is taking shape in Hamburg. The new terminal is operated by Cruise Gate Hamburg GmbH and will serve as a central component for the steadily growing cruise traffic in the Hanseatic city. Cruise Gate Hamburg has long been synonymous with first-class handling of ship arrivals in Hamburg, and with the construction of the second terminal, this service will be further expanded.

The project carries multiple dimensions for the city: on one hand, it strengthens Hamburg’s role as a gateway to the world in the cruise sector. On the other hand, it fits seamlessly into the development of HafenCity, where a new, vibrant district is emerging with the Überseequartier. The Cruise Center HafenCity thus creates a close connection between the city, its visitors, and the maritime heritage that makes Hamburg so unique.

Hamburg and it's Cruise Ships

Over time, Hamburg has developed into one of Europe’s leading cruise destinations. In 2023, more than 1.2 million passengers were already counted, and the numbers continue to rise. Over 50 ocean-going ships called at the city a total of 278 times, alongside numerous river cruise ship arrivals. In doing so, Cruise Gate Hamburg solidifies its role as a central hub for cruise tourism in Germany.

With the new Cruise Center HafenCity, set to begin operations in 2025, Hamburg will become even more attractive. Two modern berths, one 345 meters and the other 230 meters long, will make the terminal suitable for even large cruise ships.

Its location in the heart of the city, right by the Überseequartier, combines functionality with experience: walking distance to sights, dining, and shopping meets state-of-the-art infrastructure.

But Hamburg is not only an important cruise port, it is also the stage for spectacular events. In particular, the Hamburg Cruise Days attract hundreds of thousands of visitors every two years.

Our Work in the HafenCity

For the Cruise Center HafenCity, we deployed one of our MK V40 timelapse cameras. With 40-megapixel resolution, a fixed interval of one image per minute, and a stable field of view, it reliably documented the interior construction of the lower reception hall.

While most of our projects take place outdoors, for the Cruise Center HafenCity, our camera was mounted directly on a vertical support at the window facing the water using a custom clamp made from Item components. From this position, it was able to capture the progress of the interior construction over approximately 15 months.

Precisely because our camera was so close to the action and the workers on site, protecting privacy was particularly important. In addition to our AI-based pixelation, we used a subtle and visually elegant method: the camera produces automatic multiple exposures. Each final image is actually composed of eight individual shots overlaid directly in the camera. People moving during this process automatically appear blurred. This way, personal data is never captured, while still producing high-quality, aesthetically pleasing images, without any extra post-processing.

This in-camera solution is a perfect example of how privacy, technology, and image quality can be harmoniously combined.

Cruise Center, Überseequartier and Timelapse

We would like to thank Cruise Gate Hamburg GmbH for the excellent cooperation. Particularly exciting for us is the connection to the overall Überseequartier project, which we documented simultaneously with several cameras, with the Cruise Center HafenCity playing a central role.

Furthermore, this project builds on our many years of experience in the cruise industry: we have already documented the construction of the AIDAnova, AIDAcosma, and AIDAprima in timelapse and have accompanied numerous shipyard works on cruise ships over many years. These projects demonstrate how versatile timelapse can be, from individual interior fittings to the construction of entire ocean giants.
